The most important factor in the low number of crews now is the high cost incomparable even with inflation factored in with 40 years ago. The cost of the car, team, logistics, etc., when converted to even per kilometre travelled is a hundred times and more.

I wouldn't say it's useless. For me, it's one of the best rallies in MS. The conditions are close to what I think a rally should be. Unfortunately, if you look at the history of the Safari, there weren't that many more crews, and they did African events for 2 years. Most of them were locals who were old enough to do what they could. Plus other adventurers... There were cars that were 5-6 years old. If the rules had been the same then as they are now, and it was mostly just current cars, I think the entry list would have been the same. Unfortunately, there are few factory teams and the conditions for locals to run a WC race are off. I honestly don't really know how to get out of it at the moment, reducing WRC performance will only reduce that appeal.
