Swiss F1 driver Marc Surer was battling with Peugeot´s Michele Mouton for the lead of the rally until he lost the control of his powerful Ford RS200 and slid of the road into the trees. Surer was thrown out of the car on impact and despite multiple fractures and burns survived the accident. Unfortunately co-driver Michel Wyder wasn´t as lucky - he was trapped inside the remains of the burning car.
